About us

Decolonising the Discipline is collaborative initiative undertaken jointly by colleagues at the English Association, the Institute of English Studies, the University of East Anglia, the Postcolonial Studies Association and University English.

We invite academics from across English Studies in the UK to join us in building a network of decolonising practitioners through which we can gather and share experiences and ideas to effect practical change.

What we do

We recognise that existing curricula, pedagogy and research are grounded in colonial sites of knowledge which reflect hierarchies of race, class and gender.

We aim to:

  • intervene in discussions concerning not only what is taught and studied but how it is taught and studied

  • develop platforms for discipline-wide conversations

  • foster and support collaborative action across English literature, language and creative writing

Join our Steering Group

We invite colleagues in English Studies from all career stages to join us in supporting the work of the Decolonising the Discipline network.

The working group coordinates two online events per year (in Spring and Autumn), maintains our website and social media presence, and connections with other decolonial initiatives.

We particularly welcome expressions of interest from those who can support our digital platforms and who have ideas for extending the work of the network.

If you’d like to join the working group, please get in touch by January 31st 2025: decolonisingthediscipline@gmail.com
